Get Involved

Buckfield residents can serve their community through Town boards and committees. To apply, submit a completed Board and Committee Application to the town office. Paper applications can also be picked up at the town office during regular business hours.

Appeals Board

The Appeals Board is a municipal board that hears and decides certain appeals involving decisions made by Town officials, boards, or departments, as authorized by local ordinance and State law. The Board provides an impartial review process and considers evidence, applicable regulations, and public testimony before reaching a decision. Its work helps ensure that local rules are applied fairly and consistently while providing residents and property owners with an established process for seeking review of municipal decisions.

Beautification Committee

The Beautification Committee works to enhance the appearance and welcoming character of the community through volunteer projects, seasonal displays, plantings, clean-up efforts, and other improvements to public spaces. The Committee helps identify opportunities to beautify Town properties and community areas while encouraging civic pride and resident involvement. Community members interested in helping with beautification projects are encouraged to get involved.

Budget Committee

The Budget Committee assists with the annual municipal budget process by reviewing proposed expenditures, discussing financial priorities, and providing recommendations on the Town’s budget. The Committee helps bring additional public input and community perspective to decisions about how municipal funds are allocated. Its work supports a transparent and thoughtful budget process before the proposed budget is presented to voters at Town Meeting.

Community Events Committee

The Community Events Committee helps plan, organize, and promote community events that bring residents together and strengthen community spirit. The Committee coordinates Buckfield’s traditional Community Day and Labor Day festivities while also supporting other community events throughout the year. Through the work of dedicated volunteers, the Committee helps create opportunities for residents, families, local organizations, and businesses to come together, celebrate Buckfield, and build a stronger sense of community.

Economic Development Committee

The Economic Development Committee works to support the Town’s long-term economic health by identifying opportunities to strengthen local businesses, encourage appropriate development, and promote Buckfield as a place to live, work, and invest. The Committee may assist with community planning, business outreach, grant opportunities, and initiatives that help expand the local tax base while preserving the character of the community. Its work helps support a strong and sustainable economic future for Buckfield.

RSU 10 Withdrawal and Reorganization Planning Committee

The BHS RSU Withdrawal and Reorganization Planning Committee is a joint effort of the Towns of Buckfield, Hartford, and Sumner established to guide the communities through the process of considering withdrawal from RSU 10 and planning for a potential new school administrative structure. Originally formed as the BHS RSU Withdrawal Committee, its role has expanded to include detailed reorganization planning involving governance, budgeting, staffing, transportation, special education, facilities, curriculum, athletics, technology, and other services necessary to operate a school district.

The Committee works collaboratively with municipal officials, school representatives, professional consultants, and the public to develop and evaluate a responsible plan for the future of education in Buckfield, Hartford, and Sumner. Its work is intended to provide voters with the information and planning necessary to make an informed decision regarding withdrawal and, if approved, support an orderly transition to a reorganized school system.

Library Committee

The Library Committee supports the operation, programs, and continued development of the Town’s library services. The Committee helps identify community needs, provides guidance on library-related priorities, and may assist with programming, fundraising, outreach, and improvements to library resources and facilities. Its work helps ensure the library remains an accessible and valuable community resource for residents of all ages.

Old Church on the Hill Committee

The Old Church on the Hill Committee works to support the preservation, rehabilitation, and future use of one of Buckfield’s historic community landmarks. The Committee helps explore opportunities for restoration, funding, partnerships, programming, and long-term reuse of the building while considering its historic character and value to the community. Its work is focused on helping ensure the Old Church on the Hill can continue to serve as a meaningful community asset for future generations.

Ordinance Development Committee

The Ordinance Development Committee assists with the development and review of municipal ordinances for consideration by the Select Board and, when required, Town Meeting. The Committee researches issues, reviews existing regulations, considers public input, and helps draft ordinance language intended to address community needs in a clear and practical manner. Its work helps provide a thoughtful and transparent process for developing local rules and regulations.

Planning Board

The Planning Board reviews land use and development proposals in accordance with the Town’s ordinances, regulations, and applicable State law. The Board considers applications such as subdivisions, site plans, and other development matters, conducts public hearings when required, and evaluates whether proposed projects meet established standards. Its work helps guide orderly growth, protect community resources, and ensure development is reviewed through a fair and consistent public process.

Recreation Committee

The Recreation Committee supports the Town’s recreation programs by helping plan activities, encourage community participation, and promote opportunities for residents of all ages to stay active and involved. The Committee works with Town staff, coaches, volunteers, and community members to help identify recreation needs, support seasonal sports and activities, and make recommendations for the continued improvement of Buckfield’s recreation programs and facilities. Residents interested in volunteering, coaching, or serving on the Recreation Committee are encouraged to contact the Town Office for more information.

Road Committee

The Road Committee helps guide the maintenance and long-term improvement of the Town’s road system. With input from the Road Commissioner, the Committee reviews road conditions, infrastructure needs, and available funding to establish the Town’s paving schedule and priorities. The Committee may also consider drainage, reconstruction, and other capital improvement needs to support safe, reliable, and cost-effective roads throughout Buckfield.

Social Services Committee

The Social Services Committee helps support programs and services that address the needs of residents and strengthen the overall well-being of the community. The Committee may review requests for assistance, identify local service needs, support community outreach efforts, and make recommendations to the Select Board regarding programs or resources that benefit Buckfield residents. Its work helps connect community needs with available support and encourages a coordinated approach to local social services.

Buckfield-Sumner Swap Shop Ad Hoc Committee

The Buckfield-Sumner Swap Shop Ad Hoc Committee was established to help plan and support the development of a new Swap Shop at the Buckfield-Sumner Solid Waste Facility. The Committee works to identify practical options for the facility, coordinate volunteer efforts, seek donations of materials and services, and help develop a plan that minimizes or avoids the use of taxpayer funds. Its work supports waste reduction, reuse, and community participation by helping create a space where usable items can be exchanged rather than discarded.
