The Town of Buckfield provides a variety of municipal services to residents, property owners, businesses, and visitors. Permits & Applications

Various activities within the Town of Buckfield may require a municipal or state permit.

Questions regarding property valuation should be directed to the Town’s Assessor, while questions regarding tax payments should be directed to the Town Clerk/Tax Collector.


Elections & Voting

The Town Clerk administers municipal, state, and federal elections for Buckfield voters.

Election-related services include:

Marriage Licenses

Residents of the State of Maine shall record a notice of their intentions to marry in the office of the clerk of the municipality in which at least one of them resides. If only one of the parties resides in Maine, the parties shall record a notice of their intentions to marry in the office of the clerk of the municipality in which the resident party resides. Once the intentions are filed and the license is issued, the parties are free to marry anywhere within the State of Maine. The license is valid for a period of 90 days from the date the intentions are filed. Out-of-State Residents must file their intentions to marry in any municipal office. Once the intentions are filed and the license is issued, the parties are free to marry anywhere within the State of Maine. The license is valid for a period of 90 days from the date the intentions are filed.

Requirements:

1. Intentions of Marriage

Couples must complete an Intentions of Marriage Application (VS2-A).

Both signatures must be acknowledged before an official authorized to take oaths, e.g. Notary Public, Municipal Clerk, etc.

The Marriage license is valid for 90 days from the date the intentions are filed.

No blood tests are required.

2. Filing Fee

The filing fee is $40 ($20 per applicant).

3. Previous Marriage(s)

If either party has been previously married, a certified copy of the death or divorce decree, whichever ended the previous marriage, must be presented to the clerk prior to the processing of the marriage license.

A certified copy of a divorce decree may be obtained from the clerk of courts in the county where the divorce was filed. The clerk of courts will certify the document using an embossed seal. A certified copy of a death certificate may be obtained from the clerk in the town of the place of death. The clerk will certify the document using an embossed seal. Photocopies are not accepted.

Once the marriage license is completed by the Officiant legally qualified to perform a marriage in Maine, and signed by two witnesses, the Officiant is required to file the license within 7 working days of the ceremony with the clerk where the license was issued.

Marriage Certificates are available once the license has been filed at the town office.

  • $15 for one copy
  • $6 for each additional copy

Records & Vital Records

The Town maintains a variety of municipal and vital records.

Vital Records

Certified copies of certain records may be available for:

  • Births
  • Marriages
  • Deaths

State law limits access to some vital records. Identification and documentation establishing eligibility may be required.

Public Records

Many municipal records are available for public inspection under Maine’s Freedom of Access Act.

Residents may submit a request for records to the Town’s FOAA Officer. Depending on the size and complexity of the request, copying, research, or staff-time fees may apply as permitted by Maine law.

General Assistance & Resident Support

The Town of Buckfield administers the State of Maine General Assistance program for eligible individuals and families experiencing financial hardship.

General Assistance may provide temporary assistance with certain basic necessities when program eligibility requirements are met.

The Town also maintains information about local, regional, and statewide organizations that provide assistance with:

Residents seeking assistance may contact the Town Office to schedule an appointment with the General Assistance Administrator.


Roads & Public Works

The Town maintains approximately 40 miles of local roads and provides road maintenance services throughout the year.

Public Works services include:

  • Winter road maintenance
  • Snow and ice control
  • Road grading
  • Ditching
  • Culvert maintenance
  • Road reconstruction
  • Roadside maintenance
  • Sign maintenance
  • Other municipal infrastructure work

Residents wishing to report a road condition, drainage problem, damaged sign, culvert issue, or other public works concern may contact the Town Office.

For emergencies involving an immediate threat to public safety, call 911.


Transfer Station & Solid Waste

Buckfield and Sumner residents are served by the Buckfield-Sumner Solid Waste Facility.

Residents can find information regarding:

  • Transfer Station hours
  • Household trash

  • Metal disposal
  • Universal waste
  • Electronic waste
  • Brush and other accepted materials
  • Items that are not accepted
  • Commercial waste hauler requirements

Emergency Services

The Town of Buckfield works with local and regional public safety agencies to provide emergency response and preparedness services for residents and visitors.

Animal Control

Animal Control services are available to address concerns involving domestic animals and certain animal-related complaints.

Residents may request a response from Animal Control regarding:

  • Nuisance or dangerous dogs
  • Animal welfare concerns

For an animal-related emergency involving an immediate danger to people, call 911.


Cemetery Services

The Town of Buckfield maintains municipal cemetery records and provides information regarding cemetery operations.

Notary Services

Notary Public services are available at the Buckfield Town Office during regular business hours when an authorized Notary Public is available.

Please do not sign your document before arriving. Documents requiring notarization should be signed in the presence of the Notary.

A valid government-issued photo identification may be required.

Because notarial acts vary depending on the document, residents may wish to contact the Town Office before visiting to confirm that a Notary will be available.
