General Assistance

General Assistance

The Town of Buckfield administers the State of Maine General Assistance Program to help eligible individuals and families who are unable to meet their immediate basic needs. General Assistance is a program of last resort and may provide temporary assistance with necessities such as food, housing, heating fuel, utilities, household and personal supplies, and certain medical expenses.

Eligibility is determined based on household income, available resources, expenses, and the circumstances at the time of application.

Applying for General Assistance

General Assistance is available by appointment. Please call the Buckfield Town Office at (207) 336-2521 to schedule an appointment with the General Assistance Administrator.

Applicants should be prepared to provide documentation necessary to determine eligibility. Depending on your circumstances, please bring:

  • Proof of household income, including wages, Social Security, SSI/SSDI, unemployment, child support, TANF, or other income
  • Recent bank statements for all accounts and information about other available financial resources
  • Rent or mortgage information
  • Current utility, heating fuel, and other household bills
  • Receipts or documentation showing recent household expenses
  • Documentation of medical or prescription expenses, if assistance is being requested for those needs
  • Information regarding employment and other benefits or assistance available to the household
  • Any notices related to the emergency, such as an eviction notice, utility disconnect notice, or fuel delivery information

Additional information may be requested by the General Assistance Administrator when necessary to determine eligibility.

General Assistance is based on need and is determined each time an individual or household applies. Assistance, when approved, is provided directly to the vendor and no cash payments are made to the applicant.
