Transfer Station
Buckfield and Sumner jointly operate the transfer station to serve both communities through an interlocal agreement.

Commercial Haulers
Commercial waste haulers conducting waste hauling services within Buckfield and Sumner, intending on disposing of household waste at the Buckfield-Sumner Solid Waste Facility are required to obtain a Commercial Waste Hauler Permit prior to using the facility for commercial purposes. Residential permits are NOT sufficient.
Haulers must complete the required application, provide proof of appropriate vehicle liability insurance, pay any applicable permit fees, and comply with all facility rules and requirements. Permits must be renewed annually and expire on June 30th.

Residents may dispose of 2 tires per day at no cost. Beyond 2 per day a disposal fee applies per tire.

Textiles
Textiles suitable for the regional textile recovery program may be placed in the designated textile collection area when the program is available.

Contaminated waste oil is not accepted.

- Hazardous Waste (including contaminated waste oil)
Household hazardous waste cannot be placed in regular household trash, bulky waste, or construction debris containers. This includes items such as chemicals, pesticides, solvents, and other hazardous products.
Gasoline and Diesel is NOT accepted at the Buckfield-Sumner Transfer Station.
Buckfield and Sumner participate in the regional Household Hazardous Waste program. Residents should use an authorized household hazardous waste collection event for these materials.

Permits and Fees
Facility permits are required to use the Buckfield-Sumner Transfer Station.
The cost of a permit is $5.00. Permits must be purchased at the Buckfield or Sumner Town Office during regular business hours. If anyone is discovered using the facility without a permit, or without a visible permit on their vehicle, staff will instruct them to leave the facility without disposing of their waste.
To help keep costs of operating the facility as low as possible, the Buckfield-Sumner Solid Waste Committee implemented fees for the disposal of certain items. These fees are based on the current cost to the town’s to dispose of these items and charged only when a resident wishes to dispose of items on the fee schedule. Residents can pay by cash or check at either the Buckfield or Sumner Town Office during regular business hours, or the facility accepts all major credit and debit cards.
